  1. Hi, I'm Rick Nicolai. I'm an administrator at Ethan Allen School in Wales, WI (correctional facility for young males ages 13-25). In addition to working at EAS(Ethan Allen School), I also have taught part-time at Waukesha County Technical College for the last 20+ years. I'm Math/Physics certified in addition to having an administrators license. About 2/3's of the youth at EAS have been expelled one or more times from a public school and committed multiple crimes that if they were adults would be felonies. Most of the offenders have gang affiliations. About 47% have been identified as having SPED needs. Usually things are peaceful, however, when things happen, they happen fast. There is usually a winner, a loser, and blood. I do a lot of mediation between youth and youth, and youth and staff. I've found that humor in the classroom helps keep youth motivatied and on task. Humor can also be a useful tool to defuse potentially serious incidents.

  2. My name is Mary Shannon. I teach at a middle school in Madison. Our students vary from affluent-about 10% to homeless. Sixty percent of our kids are on free and reduced. I have been at this building for 10 years. We have some serious behavior issues and I think a few may be spending time with Rick Nicolai now. I taught kids with EBD-emotional behavioral disabilities prior to the job I hold now, teaching sixth graders. Most days there is very little discernible difference. My job continues to grow more challenging each year and hopefully this class will assist in keeping myself centered.
I don't know a thing about blogging so this will certainly be an adventure.

  3. Hello! My name is Tiffany Hess and I am in my 7th year teaching. I began teaching 2nd grade (for one year) and then taught 1st grade for 5 years. This year I am back in 2nd grade and I love it! I teach in central Pennsylvania (very near Bucknell or Susquehanna University...about an hour from Penn State).

The things that bring most laughter and joy in my life are my three boys...their dogs! We just adopted another the third about ten days ago and we are very excited! I love watching them play and learn new things. I also help with a canine rescue group which I really enjoy. I coach 5th-6th grade girls' basketball and my girls make me laugh every day we're together!

I constantly joke and laugh with my students in school, so I am really excited about this class!

  5. My name is Kris Thomas. I have been teaching second grade at Deerfield Elementary School for eight years. It is a great age to teach! Most of the children are enthusiastic about school. There are a wide variety of needs. We have kids with learning disabilities, attention deficits, autism, physical handicaps as well as you average (or gifted) student. Meeting all their needs and keeping everyone interested can be challenging. We enjoy laughing and having a good time in our classroom so I am looking forward to this class. Other things that bring me laughter are my own two boys, my husband and friends.

  6. My name is Laura Peacock, and I am a 2nd grade teacher in Deerfield, Wisconsin. I have been teaching 2nd graders for the last 7 years, and they bring me laughter and joy (along with many challenges) every day!

Prior to teaching 2nd grade, I taught students with special needs (LD/ED) at the high school and elementary school levels (11 years), 5th grade (3 years), and a 3rd-4th grade looping class (2 times for 4 years total)--just wanted to be sure you knew I've been teaching for awhile (or maybe that I'm getting a bit old)!

Besides my second graders, my 2 dogs, my husband, my children, and my friends bring me much joy and laughter. I especially enjoy watching my children doing what they love to do --for my 19 year old son, that would be spending time with our 7 year old German Shorthair, Katie, and tinkering with his scooters, 3 wheelers, and cars in the garage, and for my 15 year old daughter, that would be caring for and riding horses.

  7. Hi,

My name is Sandy Jensen, and I am a fifth grade teacher in the New Berlin School District. I teach at Ronald Reagan Elementary. I teach all subjects except for science as two classes switch for science and social studies.
I have taught 2nd grade, pre-school, GT Resource, 1st-3rd in one room(years ago)and enjoyed most of those assignments.
The activities that bring me the most joy and laughter are spending time with my husband and children and three granddaughters. It is so fun being a grandma!

  8. Leora Wagner here. Am starting my 20th (I think ! ) year at Deerfield Elementary. After moving grades quite a bit I seem to have settled in Second Grade. If they try to move me again they will have to pick my fingernails and toenails up--as I go screeching like a cat being put into a kennel! Life (and I hope death) is full of humor. My dear Mother just died and we had her service last Friday. We stood at her grave and told "funny" Connie stories for an hour! It was the best service I have ever attended! She would have loved to be in this class with us---and who's to say she's not?

  9. Hi! I'm Debbie Barrick. I have been teaching for 20+ years, spending 2 years in 4th grade, 1/2 year in 5th, 14 in kindergarten and this is my 5th year as an elementary librarian. I teach in the same district as Tiff, Selinsgrove, but am currently without a "home". We are undergoing a building project and I am library-less. It has been a challenging year and I am finding it is more fun to laugh, than cry about it.

I have 3 Labs (one of each color) and they make me laugh & smile every single day. Right now the puppy, 5 months, is the most entertaining. Her antics are priceless. I'm also a huge hockey fan, so things are pretty exciting this time of year. I love to travel and see new things, get together with friends, and read.
